£6.9 billion over a decade: what does that buy you?
Worcestershire has a large transaction record in our dataset. We cover £6.9 billion in recorded spend across 743,414 transactions, drawn from 219 source files spanning 2015 to 2026. This is a county council serving just under 600,000 people across 672 square miles of the West Midlands. On the contracts side, we've tracked 172 published contracts worth a combined £40.6 million, plus 122 tenders with a combined value of just over £1 billion. The tender pipeline captures the larger-value opportunities, while contract records skew toward smaller, already-awarded work. Payment data collection runs to December 2025.
Three sectors take 71p of every pound. Who's getting it?
Health and social care leads at 29.8% of matched spend, followed by construction at 20.7% and education at 20.4%. Together those three sectors account for roughly 71p in every pound we've tracked. But the top supplier list tells a slightly different story. Worcestershire Children First, the council's own children's services company, tops the table at £616 million. Ringway Infrastructure Services follows at £540 million, then Alun Griffiths at £198 million. Construction and education firms feature heavily in the top five, with Bromsgrove Schools SPV (a PFI vehicle classified under construction) at £100 million and Matrix SCM, classified under administrative and support services, at £92 million. Across all records, we've matched 7,624 suppliers, with 7,303 unique identified companies. The HHI sits at 377, which is low. The top five suppliers account for 34.3% of spend, and the top ten for 40%. That's a reasonably spread market. No single supplier dominates, though the council clearly has longstanding relationships with its highways and children's services providers.
Six procurement records with method data: what do they show?
We hold method data for only six of the 172 contract records, all above threshold. Four went through open tender and two were direct awards. The median contract value across those six is £1.5 million, though that sample is too small to draw conclusions about the council's broader procurement approach. The 122 tenders in our data, worth over £1 billion combined, give a better sense of the pipeline's actual scale. Beyond the top suppliers already covered, the remaining spend is spread across thousands of smaller providers. The 7,303 unique suppliers span 22 sector categories, with professional and technical services (4.4%), transport (3.5%), and IT (2.2%) forming a second tier below the big three. Our data is sourced from Find a Tender and the council's own transparency pages, all published under OGL v3.
